Smooth mosaic blocks on a photo you already own, in the browser

Tool Hub interpolates mosaic cells in your tab. Use it on pictures you own. It cannot honestly decrypt a mosaic back into the original pixels.

A mosaic, or pixelation, replaces each square of an image with one colour. That step throws the original detail away. No tool can honestly decrypt those blocks back into the true pixels. What you can do, on a photo you already own, is interpolate the remaining cell colours so the grid is less harsh.

When mosaic removal is the right tool

Use this page on stills you own: a screenshot you pixelated yourself, a compressed still with block artefacts, a picture you want less “grid-like” before you print a copy you already have rights to. Typical jobs: a slide; a family photo you mosaicked and now want softer for a private album.

This is not a spy product. It will not reconstruct a face that was legally or illegally mosaicked on a file you do not own. This is not upscale. Enlarging is a different live tool on the hub only if that slug exists as a file tool — do not open /upscale on this host as if it were live; that family mount is 404. This is not EXIF stripping. Run EXIF remover if tags are the worry.

I use it on mosaics I made. I do not use it as a promise to undo someone else’s redaction.

What the tool can and cannot do

It finds a likely block size, or you set one manually, and interpolates. The result is a smoother image. It is not the original. If the auto-detect misses the grid, match one cell by eye and set that size. If the mosaic is tiny (2×2 cells on a face), interpolation cannot invent an identity. Anyone selling “AI decrypt mosaic” as recovery of the true pixels is selling a story.

What “in the browser” means

Decode and interpolate in the tab. File API. Local download. Offline-after-load is a fair test. We do not need the photo on a GPU cloud for this job.

How I run it here

  1. Open https://tools.sw-commercial.com/mosaic-remover.
  2. Pick the image you own.
  3. Let auto-detect try, then switch to a manual block size if the grid is still obvious.
  4. Check the preview. Look at edges of the mosaic, not the marketing crop.
  5. Download. Keep the mosaicked original if that was the version you meant to share publicly.

Failure cases I hit while using it

JPEG artefacts that look like mosaic but are not a regular grid. Interpolation then smears the whole picture. If there is no grid, do not run this tool.

Very large stills are slow in the tab. That is your CPU.

When not to use this page

Do not use it on images you do not have the right to process. Ownership is not a slider.

Do not use it to “unredact” a document mosaic. If the mosaic was the redaction, the honest product is to go back to the unredacted file you were supposed to keep privately, not to attack the public copy.

Do not upload the file to a cloud “unpixelate” demo. That is the opposite of this page.

A worked example

I pixelated a slide for a talk, then wanted a less harsh print for a private booklet of the same talk. I own both versions. I run mosaic remover on the mosaicked PNG, set the block size to match one cell, download, and print the private booklet. I still use the mosaicked file on the public slide.

I do not run the tool on a news screenshot of a mosaicked face and claim I recovered anyone. The honest sentence is interpolation of cells I already had the right to process. If auto-detect picks 8 px and the grid is 12 px, the output looks oily. I switch to manual. If there is no grid, I close the tool.
