Make a passport photo at home without a studio upload

Passport and visa photos have a boring specification and an expensive storefront. A booth in a mall will take the picture, crop it, and print it. Many websites will do the same after you upload a selfie. If you already have a decent photo on a phone, the missing piece is usually crop, background, and millimetre size — not a trip across town.

What a spec-compliant photo actually is

Governments publish size, head height, background colour, and expression rules. The United States passport photo is 2×2 inches. Many Schengen visas want 35×45 mm. Background is usually plain white or off-white. Glasses, shadows, and filters are where home photos fail — not the brand of the website.

No in-browser tool can swear your photo will pass a specific embassy on a specific day. Lighting in your hallway is on you. ID Photo’s job is to apply the dimensions and a local background treatment without sending the portrait to a lab queue.

How to shoot the source picture

Use a second person if you can. Face the camera. Daylight from the front beats an overhead kitchen light that puts a shadow in the eye sockets. Stand a step away from a plain wall. Do not crop tightly in the camera; leave room so the tool can place the head in the spec window.

Skip beauty modes. Skip wide-angle selfies that warp the nose. Wear the clothes the form allows. If the country bans glasses, take them off now, not in an editor later.

Transfer the file to the computer you will use, or open the site on the phone. Either way, you will pick the image from local storage.

How to use ID Photo

4. Adjust the crop so the head sits in the guide. The page runs on the device, including background work that would be an upload on a studio site.

6. Print at 100% scale. Photo paper and a shop that understands “do not fit to page” still matter.

You do not create an account. You do not wait in an email queue for a “your photos are ready” link that is actually a download from their disk.

Background removal, honestly

Studio paper is even. A home wall is often not. ID Photo can treat the background locally the way our Cutout tool removes a backdrop from other pictures. On a first run, the browser may download a public model file. That download is the model, not your face. After that, many sessions keep working without sending the portrait anywhere.

If the hair edge looks wrong, reshoot on a plainer wall. Fighting a busy bookshelf in software is how people end up with a halo that a clerk rejects.

What we will not say

We will not say “guaranteed accepted.” We will not say “official government service.” We will not ask you to upload a passport data page so an AI can “check the photo.” The data page is a worse secret than the portrait.

If a country requires a wet-ink studio stamp, a home print will not replace that. Read the form. Use this tool when the form allows a printed photo you supply.

Printing without shrinking the spec

A correct digital file can still fail at the printer. “Fit to page” in the print dialog adds a margin and shrinks a 35×45 mm photo. Choose actual size / 100%. If you print on A4, put four copies on one sheet only if the layout keeps each frame at the named millimetres. Cut on the frame, not inside it.

Glossy 4×6 paper is fine for many countries. Some desks want matte. If the form is silent, matte is the safer default because it scans cleaner. Do not put the photo in a filter app “to make it pop” after ID Photo has sized it.

If the clerk rejects it

Ask which rule failed: size, background, head height, or expression. Size and crop are the tool. Lighting and glasses are a reshoot. Do not keep re-uploading the same dark selfie to other websites hoping a different crop will fix a shadow. Take a new source picture, then run ID Photo again on the device.
